Top Tips for Buying a Pushchair

Top Tips for Buying a Pushchair

By Rachel Newcombe

Buying a pushchair can seem like a bit of a minefield. These days there are so many different types on the market, not to mention a variety of manufacturers, that it’s hard to know where to start. If you’re soon planning on choosing and buying a pushchair, here are some top tips to get you started.

1. Spend time researching product options first. Get a whole load of catalogues and have a good look through. Decide which type of pushchair you want, such as an all-terrain three wheeler, a three-in-one, traditional or forward facing, then go and look at the different products available in the shops.

2. Think about how you’ll use the pushchair and what purpose it needs to serve. For example, will you be lugging it around a lot on public transport, will you it regularly or occasionally, and do you want it to have a long life and still be durable for use by other children?

3. Check out the weight of a pushchair. This is especially so if you will need to lift it a lot – for example, putting it in and out of a car boot, lifting it up stairs or in and out of public transport. Some models are very durable, but also very heavy.

4. Make sure the model you’re interested will fit into your boot. Depending on the size of your car boot, it may be a squeeze and leave little room for anything else. Don’t be afraid to ask if you can try it out in your car boot before you buy.

5. Make sure the pushchair will be comfortable for your child. Some lighter models, for example, may have less suspension and be a bit bumpy, whereas others are more robust and suitable for all terrains. Check how much padding it has, whether the seat can be adjusted and whether it’s made of waterproof material.

6. Look at the options available from a wide range of different brands. Be aware that just because a product is more expensive than others, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s better.

7. Read reviews and ask other parents for recommendations. It’s always good to hear what’s worked – and what hasn’t – for other families.

8. Ask the shop for a full demonstration of the product before you buy. This should cover a demo of how the pushchair is assembled and collapsed – and make sure you try this out too, as it’s you that will be doing it!

9. Check what safety measures the pushchair has and ensure that it meets all the standard product safety regulations.

10. Pushchairs should come with a guarantee, but it’s important to check out how long the guarantee is for. Does it start from when you buy the product or from when your baby is born and you start using it?

And finally, don’t forget to ask if there any extras included. For example, some models or special offers may include accessories in the price too, and this may make one model more affordable than it at first seems.
